Cello End Pin Anchors – What are your favorites?
Cello end pin anchors, also called end pin stops or rock stops, keep cello end pins from slipping and also help protect carpet, tile, and hardwood floors from damage. They are an essential accessory for every cellist. With so many different styles, types, and brands, which is the best for you and your students? Let’s explore…
The first thing to consider is the floor type you are dealing with. Do you have carpet, tile, or other type of surface? Is your performance space different than your classroom? (ie. Carpet in the classroom, hard wood on stage)
Strap style
The strap style anchors are generally most secure because they connect to the chair students sit on. One drawback is that they have to be adjusted properly and this can take some time. The Xeros brand is most popular.
- Adjustable, 2″ wide heavy duty woven strap with large D-ring secures the molded cup with non-slip sole directly to almost any chair leg
- Adjustable form 16″ to 32″ to accommodate most players
- Folds compactly for storage
- Made in the USA
This style rock stop was highly recommended by many of my cello colleagues and the Xeros brand in particular came most highly recommended. There are also some off brands available in this style as well.
Disk or Puck style
These anchors have a rubber foam bottom with a cup on top made of metal. For years, these have been quite popular. They are usually the least expensive and are most portable. When they get dusty, sometimes they will slip. I’ve found by cleaning them with Clorox wipes, it helps restore their grip.

Rubber Pad
These are relatively new but work well due to their sticky nature. A a new popular model is one by D’Addario.
- SECURE YOUR PERFORMANCE – Secure your performance with the D’Addario Endpin Anchor for cello and bass.
- PREVENTS MOVEMENT – Endpin Anchors prevent instrument movement and the mistakes it can cause, while also protecting the floor beneath the instrument.
- COMPACT – Compact and easy to store, the D’Addario Endpin Anchor is made to handle the weight of larger orchestral instruments, assuring that your cello or bass will always stay in place.
- GRIP & STABILITY – Textured design enhances grip and stability.
- WORKS FOR – Works for both Cello and Bass instruments.
Don’t forget your double bass players!
Double bassists often need a rock stop, especially if the rubber tip on the endpin has fallen off or worn through. I have found that most double bass players prefer the puck or rubber pad style end pin stops. The strap type are less effective since bassists sometimes stand while playing and don’t always use a stool.
Care and Maintenance
Generally rock stops don’t need a lot of maintenance, but I have found that non-strap style endpin anchors need some cleaning after a while so that they retain their ability to stick to the floor. Dust, hair, and other debris can litter the bottom of the rock stop and reduce its holding power. I usually have a container of wet wipes available for students to use to clean the bottom of the rock stop. In addition, maintaining your floors with regular sweeping/dusting also helps make a big difference. My classroom has tile floors and I make sure to strike my chairs at least once per week so that my school custodian can sweep the floors.
