Chamber Music in the Orchestra Classroom

One of the most important elements of string instruction is ensemble playing, and it should begin as early as possible. Duets and small ensembles provide an ideal foundation, helping students develop essential skills such as listening, balance, phrasing, intonation, and tone quality—skills that directly translate to success in larger ensembles.

Each year, I incorporate a chamber music unit in which students form small ensembles and perform for the class at the end of the school year. In my district—especially at the high school level—late spring is dominated by testing. Beginning in late April, students are frequently absent for EOC exams, AP testing, and other assessments, and seniors finish a week earlier than underclassmen. These factors make scheduling a full ensemble concert challenging, so our final large-group performance typically takes place in mid-to-late April. The remaining weeks of the school year are devoted to alternative learning experiences, with chamber music being a highlight.

During this unit, students choose their own groups and repertoire, which fosters both ownership and creativity. While the classroom may appear busy—students rehearsing in different corners, hallways, and practice rooms—it is a highly productive environment filled with collaboration and focused music-making.

Although some students explore music from online platforms, many gravitate toward our classroom library of chamber music books. I maintain class sets of flexible, compatible ensemble collections that allow for virtually any instrumentation.
